Tips That Help Your Mom Age With Confidence

Hire home care providers to give your loved one the extra helping hand to remain as independent as possible. Here is how they may help.

Almost 80% of adults aged 50 or older want to remain in their homes for the rest of their lives. Your mom is one of them. She lives alone, so you both have some fears about her maintaining her independence. Hire home care providers to give her the extra helping hand to remain as independent as possible.

How do you and her home care aides help her age with confidence?

Provide Companionship

Keep track of how often people visit your mom. If she’s going weeks without anyone stopping by, that has to be addressed. She should have people visiting at least once a week, but more is better. The more social she remains, the better it is for her mental, emotional, and physical health.

Assess Her Driving

If your mom is still driving, make sure she should be. If she has worsening eye health that impairs her vision, she shouldn’t drive anymore. Home care providers can bring her to appointments and join her on shopping trips.

Improve Her Home Safety

Heighten safety in your mom’s home, even if she doesn’t need it yet. If you have focused on the key areas that often become issues in the future, you won’t have to rush to get things done. The most common home safety issues are inadequate lighting, especially in entryways and staircases, and lack of safety features in the bathroom.

Make Sure Her Medical Needs Are Addressed

When was your mom’s last medical exam? If it’s been more than a year, it’s time for her to get caught up. At the very least, she should have her blood pressure checked, blood tests run to check her cholesterol, and vaccinations caught up.

She also should schedule an appointment with her eye doctor if it’s been a while. She should be screened for conditions that are more likely as you age, such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma.

Keep Up With Twice-Yearly Visits to the Dentist

Dental cleanings are the third area of health care that your mom should get caught up with, if necessary. She should be going for at least two dental cleanings and exams each year. If she has gum disease, she may need to go more often.

At home, she needs to keep up with oral care routines. At a minimum, she should brush her teeth twice a day and floss once. She can rinse with a fluoride mouthwash to help strengthen her tooth enamel. If she has arthritis, she might benefit from ergonomic dental floss tools and toothbrushes.
