As kids get back to school, cold and flu season will follow shortly after. Help your dad stay healthy, even if he loves when his grandkids visit. He doesn’t have to avoid them. He just needs to ensure he’s taking measures to avoid contracting any viruses they bring home from school using these tips. In-home care providers can assist him with some of these suggestions.
Updated Vaccinations
With flu season approaching, your dad needs to start thinking about his annual flu shot. If he gets it at his doctor’s office, he should make an appointment now. Ideally, he wants to get the shot in mid-October, but his doctor may recommend it sooner if he has underlying health issues.
He should also ask his doctor about a COVID booster. New strains keep hitting all areas of the world, and boosters help lower the chances of severe symptoms.
Other immunizations your dad may need include the pneumococcal and shingles vaccinations. Shingles is a disease that occurs when the dormant chickenpox virus reappears later in age. Pneumococcal shots protect against pneumonia and meningitis.
Your dad should ask his doctor if he’s missing any immunizations and make sure there are no newer recommendations. Some doctors are starting to suggest adults in a certain age group get the Hep B vaccination. Your dad should ask.
In-Home Care Aides Assist with Errands and Shopping
Finally, your dad can have in-home care aides help him with shopping trips and errands. If he wants to shop but often forgets things like a face mask or hand sanitizer, his caregiver can remind him. He’ll have help carrying his bags and using a self-checkout when there are no open registers.
While he’s out, your dad’s caregiver can make sure he stocks up on berries and other antioxidant-rich fruits. If he needs prescription refills or over-the-counter cold remedies, his caregiver can help him find the products his doctor recommends.
Meal Preparation
Keep your dad’s immune system in the best possible condition by making sure meals include vital minerals and vitamins. He should eat plenty of produce each day. The general goal is three cups of vegetables and two cups of fruit in a variety of colors. Lean protein, dairy, and whole grains are equally important.
Throughout the day, your dad needs to stay hydrated, too. Aim for at least two liters of water, unless his doctor has him restricting his intake for health reasons. In-home care aides can remind him when it’s time to have another drink or snack.
Your dad may not be able to cook meals on his own. If he relies on canned soups that are high in sodium, his caregiver can make homemade broths and soups that are packed with nutrients that help boost his immune system.
With in-home care services, your dad has healthy meals, assistance catching up on vaccinations and doctor’s appointments, and help purchasing items needed for his overall health. Talk to our in-home care specialist to learn more.
