On June 28, 2023, I arranged a special treat for one of our clients, Mr. Malcolm Gailey who is 102 years old. I have formed a good relationship with Mr. Gailey. He is a retired Georgia Tech Professor. He also graduated from Georgia Tech (GT) and was in the Army. I also graduated from GT and was in the Army.
The Independence Day Holiday was soon approaching. He was in desperate need of a new American Flag in front of his home. I contacted my friend Jeff Hunt (also a GT Grad) who is a troop leader for The Boy Scouts of America in the area. I told him the need. I told him that I would supply a new American Flag if he would have his Scouts retire the colors and mount the new flag pole and raise the colors. There was no hesitation in his answer. Yes.
The Boy Scouts came to his house that day and met Mr. Gailey, his daughter Carolyn and our caregiver Edward Evans. Interestingly, Mr. Gailey knew some of the scouts from his church.
The Scouts proceeded to retire the colors and folded it in its customary manner. They will eventually dispose of that flag in the proper ceremonial manner.
The Scouts mounted the flag pole and raised the colors. Then we all recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
At the end of the ceremony, Mr. Gailey was very happy, grateful, and a little emotional for everything that was done for him. There might have been a few tears too.
It was such a privilege to help our client with a little extra something and to honor a long (really long) standing member of the community too.
