Determining the right time to talk to somebody about in-home care services isn’t always so obvious. Your elderly mother or father may be struggling with Activities of Daily Life (ADLs), calling you regularly to vent, complain, whine, or even ask for help, but does that mean it’s the right time to discuss in-home care?
We have put out three simple questions that can help you determine the answer to this important question. Just remember, if you wait too long and something bad happens, you may feel guilty for a long time, but it’s still not something that was your responsibility. It’s something that you want to do out of love.
Before hiring in-home care for your loved one, here are some questions to ask.
Question #1: How often are you called on for help?
Remember we just talked about being asked to help out around the house? Maybe you live in the same town or close by and your mother or father keeps calling you for assistance. It might be for little things at first, like going to the store, getting to a doctor’s appointment, getting something from the attic, or whatever.
In time, those requests for assistance keep growing. Before long, you start to wonder if you even have a life of your own. It seems as though all of your free time is devoted to this aging parent. If that’s the case, then it’s well past time to talk about in-home care.
Question #2: Do you worry about the senior’s safety when you’re not there?
Do you lie awake at night wondering if your mother or father is safe in bed? Or do you envision that they tried to get out of bed to go to the bathroom or do something else, slipped, fell, and are now hurt on the floor with no way to reach the phone?
If you reach that point when you’re constantly worrying about the senior’s safety when you’re not there, when you can’t talk to them, that’s a good sign you need to discuss in-home care now.
That doesn’t mean they are going to accept it and hire a home care aide tomorrow, but you begin planting the seed and tie it to your fears about their safety when you’re not around.
Question #3: Does this senior want to remain home or go to a facility?
Most aging men and women would prefer to remain in the comfort of their homes for the rest of their lives, if possible. With the right in-home care support, it is possible.
However, if they wait too long, if they keep trying to do everything on their own, turning to you or maybe another family member or friend to the point where you get burned out, can’t do it anymore, or even push yourself to the breaking point with your health, what happens then?
If they want to remain home, they need to get serious about the right support. An experienced in-home care agency is well-equipped to provide the care and support seniors need so they can remain safe and comfortable in the home where they are happiest.
