Aging at home is your dad’s dream, and you want to support him as much as you can. The problem is that you live in a neighboring state, so you’re only able to visit him a few times a year. When you don’t live nearby and he needs help, what happens? Is he going without until you’re available or does he risk his safety and try to do it himself? It may be time to consider services from a senior home care provider.
It’s time to take a closer look at what household chores challenge him the most. What can be done to make it easier for him to complete all of these cleaning tasks?
Vacuuming and Sweeping
Older adults don’t always find vacuuming and sweeping main living areas to be too challenging. It can become difficult if your dad has stairs to vacuum or upstairs bedrooms. Lifting and carrying a heavy, awkward vacuum from one floor to another may be a problem.
Sweeping may not be too difficult, either, but he may not have the best vision. He thinks he’s sweeping everything, but he misses a lot of pet fur and crumbs. If this is happening, it helps to have a caregiver available for vacuuming and sweeping.
Bedding and Towel Changeovers
Once a week, your dad needs his sheets changed. He has to swap his towels for fresh ones. Making his bed with new sheets is hard, as he doesn’t have the strength or balance to lift a corner of the mattress to fit the corner on properly. If he’s struggling, it’s time to have someone else take care of making the bed.
Dishes and Kitchen Surfaces
Your dad’s vision keeps him from properly washing his dishes. He can load his dishwasher, but he has a hard time setting the wash cycle as he can’t read the options. Your dad may not always wipe down his stove or counters properly, and ants are attracted to the spills he misses.
Bathroom Surfaces
Bathrooms can be very germy areas, so your dad needs to keep his clean. He needs to sanitize faucets and sinks and wipe down the toilet rim and surfaces. He should also run a toilet scrubbing pad or brush around the toilet bowl each week. If he can’t do that much, he needs a senior home care aide to help out.
Trash and Recycling
At least once a week, trash and recycling need to be taken out. It may need to happen more often if his recycling builds up quickly. On trash days, someone needs to move his bins to the curb or the appropriate pick-up area.
Dusting
Surfaces like tables, entertainment centers, and shelves should be dusted each week or two. This keeps dust and allergens from building up. If he can’t hold the duster, he needs someone to keep up with dusting.
Laundry
Finally, your dad’s dirty clothes, sheets, and towels need to be laundered each week. He may have a hard time carrying his hamper to the laundry room. If his washer and dryer are in the basement, the basement stairs may be too dangerous for him to go down. It’s time to hire a caregiver to do his laundry for him.
When your dad cannot do some of the cleaning tasks that need to be completed, arrange for senior home care aides to help him out. He shouldn’t have to struggle or wait until you’re in town. Senior home care aides can wash dishes, make beds, do the laundry, and so much more. Call our agency specialist to learn more about the services and prices.
