Home care services are a great elder care option for aging seniors. It is one of the most preferred because it allows people to age in place. What does it mean to age in place? It means seniors can remain home, even if they need assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs). It means elderly men and women have the option of remaining in a place where they might be most comfortable, perhaps have lived for decades.
Home care can be provided through numerous options, but the best is when it is done by an agency. An agency provides experience. The caregivers who work for agencies often have far more experience than independent ones. Also, with an agency, if the primary caregiver is sick or otherwise indisposed, another person can step in so the senior or his or her family doesn’t have to scramble and try to find somebody to be there for that aging person.
But, what are the three most important aspects of home care? This list might be different from the perspective of an adult child of a senior who needs assistance, but this is about the senior himself or herself.
First, it’s about availability.
If somebody is only available to be with an aging senior during the evening, but he or she needs assistance in the morning, what good is that going to do? Sure, they might be able to move some activities from the morning to the evening, but the seniors will still have difficulty when they first get up. Being available when the senior needs support is crucial when it comes to in-home care.
Second, it’s about security and safety.
Seniors should be safe and secure in their own homes. That’s not always the case though, especially when they have mobility challenges.
With a quality in-home care aide, seniors can feel confident when they need to take part in various activities, including bathing or toileting, going to the store, and doing other chores like that.
Third, it’s about consistency.
If somebody hires an independent home care aide who suddenly gets sick, or injured, or whose child is home from school (and has to stay home), what does the senior do then? They don’t have anybody they can call immediately to fill in.
Some seniors may not know what to do if their primary caregiver is not available at the last minute. With a home care agency, though, there would be somebody ready to step in and support the elderly person almost at a moment’s notice.
That doesn’t mean they’re going to replace the primary caregiver, but for that day or series of days, they will certainly be able to have somebody stopping by to support the senior with whatever tasks they need.
These are the things that tend to be most important to aging seniors. Most elderly men and women find that quality in-home care aides provide a great service by allowing them to remain in the place they’re most comfortable and happy.
