If your loved one likes goals and rewards, set up goals for him to reach each week or month so that while he’s exercising, he can also feel like he’s achieving something. This can help each workout be more exciting as he pushes himself to do better. Then, don’t forget to set up rewards along the way for each level reached.
On the flip side, you can also motivate by sharing with your loved one that he doesn’t need to finish it all today, but if he can just do half or a quarter of his exercises planned, it’ll be better than nothing. For some, the idea of having to do all of it is overwhelming so they opt to do nothing. But if you or your loved one’s home care provider explain he only needs to do 10 minutes of his 30-minute walk, you never know. Once he’s going, he may just decide to do the whole thing anyway.
Don’t let him get bored. Boredom often results from not having anything new to see or do during exercise time. If your loved one is a walker, have him try a different path each week. His home care provider could drive him to the local park to walk or if he needs to walk inside, he could go to the mall instead of the gym.
Give him company. Having some company can keep a person motivated. Knowing that his home care provider is coming over just to walk with him might be what he needs to keep motivated. If he goes to a community center to exercise, he may make some new friends to exercise with as well.
Find activities that he loves. If there is a physical activity that your loved one enjoys, help him include it in his exercise routine so that he’ll stay more motivated to continue.
