How To Perform A Breast Self-Exam

Did you know that 40% of breast cancer cases are detected at home? We encourage you to prioritize a regular breast self-exam, not only for your clients but for you and the women in your life!

It is easier for seniors to perform a breast self-exam lying down. Place a pillow under your client’s right shoulder and situate her right arm behind her head. If necessary, step out of the room to give her more privacy. Next, encourage her to use her left hand to move the pads of her fingers around her right breast in gentle circular motions, covering the entire breast area and armpit.

Tell her to use pressure to squeeze the nipple and to check diligently for any discharge or lumps. Then have her repeat these steps on her left breast.
