Everyone, no matter how old they are, should have hobbies they love to do. If your senior has suddenly stopped caring about the hobbies they have loved so much, it is a bad sign and something that family caregivers should discuss with their senior home care providers. Sometimes it just means that a senior lifestyle is changing and they need new hobbies that will help bring them joy.
Here are some hobbies that seniors can try while aging in place.
Deck Gardening
Your senior may have loved gardening but can no longer walk around the outdoors or in hilly areas or uneven paths. This can make it harder to have a massive garden and it is much harder to take care of. Instead of trying to take care of massive beds in the backyard, they may want to try something smaller just on the deck especially if it is a nice sunny deck. Your loved one can grow cucumbers, tomatoes, herbs, and lots of flowers right from their deck. This is something healthy for them to watch flourish and they may even get some fresh produce from their garden on the deck. Pots tend to be a lot more manageable because a senior can keep it to a few plants but also not need to walk very far away. A deck is more even than the ground and it can be easier for senior home care to help manage and keep a senior safe on the deck versus out in the yard. This is still a good way for seniors to get movement in their routines as well.
Try Out Scrapbooking
For many people scrapbooking is not only a way to boost memories and think about things but it is also a good way for seniors to maintain motor skills and hand-eye coordination. A senior will be cutting, pasting, and rearranging pictures to put together in a book. This can take a few minutes to several hours so it is a good hobby for someone who wants flexibility when it comes to the amount of time they spend doing something. This is the ultimate craft for seniors and it can be a lot of fun. They can start making them as gifts or just for themselves to sit and remember things. Senior home care can help make this part of a weekly routine that allows a senior to flourish.
Painting
Not every senior is good at painting or even knows how to paint. Luckily, you’re never too old to try something new. There are tons of YouTube tutorials on how to paint and a senior can start practicing with easy tutorials and work their way up to harder ones. If they need help getting craft supplies, almost everything can be ordered online, or senior home care can help drive them to their local craft store to pick up supplies to start this hobby. Most paintings take several days to finish. Keep in mind that if your loved one wants to paint but doesn’t necessarily know how or want to practice, they can choose to paint by numbers which can be just as rewarding.
