Are you pretty much like the average American when it comes to topics of elder care? If so, then you’ve probably heard about home care services as an option for aging seniors, but what else do you know about it? Most Americans simply don’t know anything other than the very basics when it comes to home care.
That is, until somebody they care about needs help at home. That’s often when the wrong decisions get made. Or, seniors dismiss all notions of elder care because they’ve developed bad habits of trusting in unreliable information regarding the topic.
What is home care?
At its basic core, a home care aide assists elderly or disabled adults in the comfort of their homes with a wide range of tasks. The most common tasks people need help with when they are disabled or are aging include bathing and toileting, preparing meals, light housekeeping, running errands, getting to a doctor’s appointment, and so forth.
You may also have a visiting nurse, sometimes referred to as a home health care provider, come in and check vital stats, administer medications, and keep the individual’s doctor updated on those visits.
Why is this care important for aging men and women?
As people get older, they face increasing health challenges. They may also deal with limited mobility. A person in their 80s might still be walking fine, getting up and down the ladder, and even doing yard work, but eventually, time and health factors are going to impact them significantly.
You might also have somebody in their early 70s who has been dealing with a long list of health issues that have left them unable to tend to most of their basic care. They want to stay in their own home, which is what most seniors would prefer, also commonly referred to as aging in place, but can they do that without help?
Doesn’t family often step up?
Yes, most of the time an adult family member, like an adult child or spouse is the person who starts taking care of that aging senior. It may seem like an act of love, and it is, but it’s going to create so much stress not just for the caregiver, but also in the relationship.
The minute a spouse or an adult child starts treating that other individual as less than a full human being or without the same independence and autonomy they once had (and this is mostly done as a result of the support they provide, not deliberately by any stretch of the imagination), it strains the relationship.
How to learn more about these services.
First, understand the different types of elder care that are available.
Second, realize that an elderly person in your family or close friend who is getting up there in years will most likely prefer to age in place. They will want to remain home as long as possible.
Third, discover how many home care agencies are operating in the area. When you find some, reach out and connect to them. Ask questions. Speak to an administrator directly. Then you will start to become less than average when it comes to knowing more about home care than most other Americans these days.
